NASSAU, Bahamas – Norwegian Cruise Line says an extensive search for a guest who went overboard Thursday while his ship sailed from Jamaica to the Bahamas was unsuccessful.
The 51-year-old man was traveling with a large group, a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement Friday, adding his family on board the ship — the Norwegian Epic, which sailed out of Port Canaveral — was now being attended to and supported.
The cruise line was notified around 3 p.m. that the man had gone overboard as the ship sailed from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, to Nassau, Bahamas, according to the statement.
“The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway. After an extensive search that was unfortunately unsuccessful, the ship was released by the authorities to continue its voyage,” the statement reads, in part. “(...) Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
