VENICE, Fla. – A whale some 70 feet in length was seen beached Sunday on a sandbar off the coast of Venice, according to the city.
Venice police, Sarasota County deputies, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel and Mote Marine Laboratory staff were there that morning, reporting the whale was about 50 feet out from Service Club Park, the city said on social media.

The beached creature was identified as a sperm whale and was still alive as of around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the posts state.
Photos of the beached whale were included in the city’s posts, which otherwise warned people to avoid the closed-off area as assessments were made. An update on the sheriff’s office’s social media shows the whale from a different angle.
