VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Port Orange Police Department said several KKK flyers were found in Volusia County on Sunday.
Police said one flyer was found at a house on Sugar House Drive, while several others were found in Daytona Beach.
The flyers, which were placed in bags of candy, are believed to have been placed sometime overnight, police said.
Port Orange Police canvassed neighborhoods trying to figure out who's responsible for the hate-filled flyers.
"I was upset. I was very furious," Jane Sciortino said.
Sciortino stumbled upon the flyers that littered the driveways on her street Sunday while she was walking her dogs. She said she picked up a bag that had some candy and a flyer promoting KKK propaganda.
One read, "Stop Aids, support gay bashing."
"This one upset me as much, if not more, because I'm part of the LGBT community, and I have many family members that are also," Sciortino said.
Sciortino posted about the flyers on Facebook and alerted police.
News 6 spoke with James Spears, the Great Titan of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK. He said the group is recruiting new members.
"Letting whites know that the Klan is in your neighborhood and for those who are actually interested and want to join. If they're white and proud, then they can join us," Spears said in a phone interview.
Spears said it's their constitutional right to pass out the fliers and promote what they stand for.
"I don't see the difference between the Ku Klux Klan today, the Loyal White Knights or the NAACP, or any other civil rights group. We're not out trying to hurt nobody," he said.
But Sciortino disagrees.
"This is not love. This is hate and you're causing more hate. There's no hate here," she said.
If police find out who delivered the flyers, they could be charged with littering. Daytona Beach Police said it also received complaints about flyers in their city.
