RIVERVIEW, Fla. – A Florida sheriff’s deputy fatally shot an 88-year-old man while doing a welfare check at his home near Riverview, according to authorities.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s officials said a neighbor asked police Tuesday to check on Ronald Ehrich after noticing his garage was open and he hadn’t been seen for at least two days.

Sheriff Chad Chronister says the deputy repeatedly identified herself as law enforcement at the home and Ehrich emerged with a gun.
Chronister says the deputy stepped back, stressed to Ehrich that he wasn’t in trouble and tried to explain she was just checking on him. The sheriff said Ehrich advanced toward the deputy with a gun and she shot him.
