Early morning fire in DeLand tears through garage, chases 2 people from home

No injuries, garage heavily damaged, firefighters say

DeLAND, Fla. – A fire that burned through the garage of a home in DeLand early Friday morning was extinguished by firefighters without injuries, according to the DeLand Fire Department.

The department’s Engine 83 made it to the home on Curry Rise Court around 12:41 a.m., according to a news release.

The fire started the attached garage, burning a hole through its roof, but crews managed to keep it from spreading to the home.

The fire was put out within five minutes of firefighters’ arrival, according to the release. Two people in the home when the fire began were awakened by smoke detectors, and they got out safely, firefighters said.

The garage was heavily damaged, and the home received smoke damage, according to the release.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but crews do not believe it is suspicious.

The Red Cross is now helping the people who live in the home.
