MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Melbourne man accused of shooting at police officers early Saturday is being held on no bond.

Anthony Rivera, 32, faces several charges stemming from the shootout with Melbourne police when they responded to a domestic violence call on Millicent Circle, according to the Melbourne Police Department. He appeared in court on Sunday, and a judge ordered he be held without bond.

“There’s nothing I can order right now that would keep the community safe. Based upon my findings, I’m going to keep those at a no-bond status,” Judge Thomas Brown said.

Police said the call was made by a woman who said her boyfriend was trying to stab her tires. Police said officers found Rivera with a handgun before he started firing at three police officers through a window on the second floor of the house.

The department said one officer returned fire at Rivera.

“The first one, I think, was like three or four, and then the second time was a lot more,” neighbor Kaylee Haddix said, recalling how many gunshots she had heard.

Rivera eventually gave himself up and was taken into custody.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim told police she and Rivera got into an argument that turned physical after leaving a bar. The suspect told police he fired from the window on the second floor after claiming he saw the woman point a gun toward him, the affidavit said.

Police said no one was injured in the incident.

Rivera faces charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery, shooting into an occupied dwelling and criminal mischief.
