Questions remain as deputies investigate teen shooting near Wekiva High School

Heightened security to remain until further notice, district officials said

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Increased security once again showed up outside Wekiva High School on Tuesday after investigators said a teen was shot on campus Friday evening. That teen was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Deputies said it happened in the parking lot after a basketball game against Edgewater High School. However, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office still won’t say what led up to the shooting, citing their active investigation.

The department did say they’re still searching for the suspect or suspects.

“I just hope that when they do find some things out, they’ll release that information, but I know it takes time,” parent Janelle Taylor said.

Taylor said her daughter knows the victim from Wekiva High School and said they’re classmates. Like many parents, she wants answers, especially after a deadly shooting two months ago in the parking lot following a football game at Jones High School. Two teens were later arrested in that case.

“What’s the core of this? Why is this happening? Is it gang related? Is it this, is it that? Yes, it will be wonderful to know what’s going on and why’s triggering a lot of these shootings,” Taylor said.

Miguel Ruiz has three grandchildren at Wekiva High School.

“No details, nothing. Only what my grandkids told me: that there was a shooting, and somebody got shot,” Ruiz said.

Orange County Public Schools said Tuesday evening’s girl’s Varsity basketball game at Wekiva High School against Jones High School is still scheduled. The district also said they’re always reviewing their safety protocols, and there would be extra security at Wekiva High and Edgewater High until further notice.

The victim’s family is asking for privacy.
