Voters trickle in for Oviedo elections, incumbent mayor faces two challengers

Incumbent mayor Megan Sladek faces two challengers

OVIEDO, Fla. – Voters in five Central Florida counties went to the polls Tuesday as elections were being held in some communities.

About a dozen cities and towns in Brevard, Lake, Orange and Seminole counties all have elections.

In Oviedo, precincts were consolidated into three locations in the city.

Some residents were still making up their minds as they went to cast ballots at Center Lake Park.

“We’re trying to figure out where we’re going to land,” David Suchanek said.  “We’re actually deciding still as we’re walking in, believe it or not.”

Incumbent mayor Megan Sladek faces two challengers: Brady Duke and Judith Dolores Smith. There are also two proposed ordinances on the ballot, one authorizing a business tax exemption program, and one to further fund a new public safety building.

“I’m a huge supporter of the police, but $40 million is a lot of money and I want to make sure we’re spending our money appropriately,” Suchanek said.

With it being an off-year election, voter turnout was lower than in mid-term or presidential election years.

In Seminole County, under 11% of registered voters cast a ballot before Election Day.

“It’s about what we expected for what we would refer to as an off-year,” Supervisor of Elections Chris Anderson said.

Polls in towns and cities that are holding elections are open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
