News 6 reporter James Sparvero went to the home and was told by a woman who answered the door that the child is doing OK and is now home from the hospital.

Through dispatch recordings, first responders reported one of the children in the residence found a gun and the shot another child.

The latest statistics on accidental child shootings from Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for new gun laws founded by former New York City mayor and democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, states there’ve been at least 27 accidental child shootings in Florida this year.

Compared to the rest of the nation, Florida only trails Texas.

Police have not commented on whether detectives are recommending charges against who the gun belonged to.

Florida has laws designed to prevent children from accessing guns without parental consent that reads if an adult keep a gun at home, it must be locked in some kind of container or have a trigger lock.

State statute 790.174 goes on to say someone who fails to secure their gun can get in trouble with the law if a minor gets their hand on that gun and then “possesses or exhibits it either in a public place or in a rude, careless, angry or threatening manner.”
