SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – After experiencing two major animal cruelty cases within the last year, Seminole County Animal Services found themselves full of dogs and cats needing their forever home.
Animal Services is looking to try and find families for their senior dogs through its ‘Seniors for Seniors’ campaign.
For the entire month of January, senior residents over the age of 60 can adopt senior dogs and cats, 6 years or older, for free. Animal Services said the program is designed to help senior humans rediscover the joy of having a dog or cat in their lives.

News 6 dropped by the shelter to meet some of the senior dogs and cats up for adoption and met 7-year-old, Vader. Vader is one of the senior dogs that’s up for adoption.
“Something that’s great about senior dogs is that they’ve been through quite a bit,” said Animal Services Interim Manager, Steve Learner. “Especially, when they come to our shelter. Anybody who’s willing to give them time and attention, they want to give that time and attention back. And, you know, giving that, that opportunity for Vader would definitely make the remainder of his time here with us, very special.”
Learner said there are benefits to seniors adopting a senior pet.
“Having a pet in general at home can really help lower your blood pressure as an as a as an individual, especially establishing a routine, you know, taking the dog out, making sure the animal is fed at a particular schedule,” Learner said. “That routine really helps build an individual’s ability to continue with day to day activities, keeping people active.”
