SANFORD, Fla. – A baseball coach for a summer collegiate team in Sanford was arrested last week after being accused of sending lewd messages to an underage girl, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

In an arrest report, police said that the coach — Josh Montero, 46 — was reported to have started a conversation with the girl via Instagram, though he eventually moved to traditional text messages between their cell phones.

Between Dec. 21 and Dec. 22, Montero sent two photos of his genitals via text messages, along with instructions on how and when to delete the photos he had sent, the report shows.

Police said they contacted Montero at his home on Jan. 16, though he wanted to consult with an attorney before speaking with officers.

Ultimately, Montero was taken into custody and faces two counts of sending obscene materials to a minor.

The arrest report states that Montero works for Florida Home Loans as a loan originator.

Montero was also named Coach of the Year in 2020 as the head of the Sanford River Rats baseball team, according to the Florida Collegiate Summer League, a program for college players that is affiliated with the NCAA.

However, the league told News 6 that he is no longer a coach for the Sanford River Rats.

Following media reports of the arrest, the city of Sanford issued a statement Thursday, clarifying that Montero was not affiliated with any City of Sanford youth league or program, and he was never employed by the city.

“The City of Sanford reassures the parents of the children registered in the City of Sanford’s youth recreation leagues and youth recreation programs that this statement is fact,” the city said.
