This Marion County elementary school could start year-round classes

Wyomina Park Elementary considered for new state pilot program

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A Marion County elementary school could start year-round classes later this fall thanks to a new state program, according to district officials on Tuesday.

In a release, the district announced that Wyomina Park Elementary School — which hosts 584 students — could begin the “modified calendar” in August.

The district is one of three districts across the state that was picked for a new pilot program signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last year, the release shows.

That law, HB 891, allows districts to apply for the program to test whether year-round schooling would be an appropriate fit for Florida students.

According to Marion County Public Schools, students at Wyomina Park Elementary would still attend 180 days of classes in a year, just like any other school.

In addition, Wyomina Park Elementary students would have about 12 weeks of vacation spread throughout the year, as opposed to having it all concentrated during the summer, district officials explained.

Aside from Marion County, Alachua and Brevard counties are also experimenting with the concept.

Staff and parents will discuss the proposal during a special meeting on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
