Daytona Beach woman arrested in death of ‘obviously neglected’ boy, police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona Beach police on Friday said they arrested a woman accused in the death of a neglected 14-year-old boy early this year.

Talia Nelson, 43, of Daytona Beach, faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child and aggravated child abuse, booking records show.

Officers had been dispatched on Jan. 1 to the Carolina Club Apartments, locating who they described as “an obviously neglected 14-year-old male,” according to a news release. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

As detectives investigated, an autopsy was performed on the boy and the medical examiner determined the cause of his death to be homicide, the release states. An arrest warrant was obtained for Nelson on Friday, police said.

Nelson was booked around 7 p.m. Friday and held on no bond.

At her first appearance in court Saturday morning, Nelson was appointed a public defender and the judge found probable cause for the charges, granting her no bond amount. She was further ordered to have no contact with victims or minors, directly or indirectly.
