Boaters medically cleared with no injuries, police say

Domestic violence call becomes officer-involved shooting in Melbourne, police say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A man, a woman and a dog were rescued by a good Samaritan after their boat capsized in the Indian River Lagoon on Saturday, according to police.

Officers responded around 7:27 p.m. to the area of the 2900 block of Riverview Drive, locating the boat about a mile offshore and two miles south of the Melbourne Causeway, the Melbourne Police Department said in a statement. The capsized boat had two people aboard who were still holding onto it as police began to speak with them, the statement reads.

A multi-agency rescue effort began, Melbourne police said, with first responders from Melbourne Fire Rescue, the Indialantic Police Department, the Melbourne Beach Police Department and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit all on hand to help get the people out of the water.

According to officers, as they worked to get a rescue boat in the water, a man on his own boat was able to reach and save the subjects, who were soon picked up by a Melbourne Fire Rescue boat and taken to the Front Street boat ramp.

The man and woman were transported to a local hospital to be examined, medically cleared and released with no injuries from the boating incident, police said.

Melbourne police said they don’t yet know why the roughly 17-foot-long “Aqua Sport” boat capsized, adding in an update Sunday there was no further law enforcement investigation into the incident.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard would assist with the removal of the boat, according to police.
