Several biometric gun safes recalled because unauthorized users can get into them

Four safes under recall

Biometric safes produced by Awesafe, BBirkin, BullDog, and Machir. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)

Three biometric gun safes and a fourth biometric personal safe are being recalled because the biometric lock on the safes can fail, allowing unauthorized people to get inside the safe and take any weapons out.

The recall affects thousands of safes made or imported by the companies BBirkin, Machir, Bulldog and Awesafe, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Machir, Bulldog and Awesafe safes were sold at Bass Pro Shops, Walmart and firearm stores nationwide. The BBirkin safe was sold exclusively on Amazon. The safes were all made in China.

Some companies have received almost 100 reports of incidents of the safes being opened because the biometric keys failed, allowing unauthorized people to get into the safes and remove items.

The CPSC advises that customers should stop using the safes. However, in some cases, the companies offer a way to replace the biometric key, while others offer ways to replace the safe.

To find out if your safe is under recall and how to remedy the situation, the CPSC has dedicated pages for each safe:
