Starting early Thursday, AT&T customers started seeing the service on their phones switch to SOS mode, which means only emergency calls can be made.
By the afternoon, officials in the Dallas-based company said they restored service to all affected customers.
After getting the network back running, AT&T officials said the outage to its U.S. cellphone network appeared to be the result of a technical error, not a malicious attack. They blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.
The carrier has more than 240 million subscribers, the country’s largest.
