ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Salvation Army Orlando Area Command announced the grand reopening of its Women’s and Children’s Shelter on Monday.
The renewed facility aims to improve living conditions and services for women and children in the community, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to a news release.

Funded by the Orange County government and supported by various stakeholders and donors, the upgraded shelter is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the community, the release stated.
Captain Ken Chapman, area commander of The Salvation Army, expressed gratitude, stating, “none of this could be made possible without the incredible sacrifices of our community members.”

The renovations focus on creating a safe, welcoming, and high-functioning refuge for women and children. Notable updates include elevators for accessibility, a fully furnished dining hall, ADA-compliant rooms, bathrooms, and a safe-space room. To cater to the needs of children, the shelter now features a brand-new playground, computers, and gaming systems.
In collaboration with Valencia’s School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Hebni, and 4Roots, The Salvation Army introduces a community garden and Seed-to-Table program. This initiative, aimed at fighting food insecurity, promotes sustainable, healthy living through hands-on gardening experiences. The program seeks to increase awareness and access to fresh ingredients while educating participants on preparing nutritious, economical meals.
Genelle Peterson, Women’s and Children’s Shelter manager, expressed joy in continuing to serve the community, stating, “After years of serving this community, I’m witnessing homelessness and domestic abuse take on a new face, and our staff is prepared to educate, empower, and love the women and children we serve from an even better facility.”
The 66-bed facility, adorned with motivating quotes and scriptures, was dedicated by The Salvation Army’s Chief Secretary for the Southern Territory, Colonel Deborah Sedler.
Sedler expressed hope, saying, “We pray that the people that come will get their lives back on track and will be able to get housing and be stable in our communities.”
