SANFORD, Fla. – On Monday, the Sanford City Commission voted to approve an emergency health declaration to make funds available for immediate maintenance of its two water treatment facilities.
The city agreed to pay $120,000 for the next year to a company in exchange for it to provide maintenance, repair and inspections of the North Water Reclamation Facility and the South Water Resource Center.
In January, documents show the city notified the state of a massive 13 million gallon sewage leak into Lake Monroe.
At the time, the city said a larger project would help with the ongoing crisis.

“The addition of the new filter system, at a cost of $4.7 million dollars, is nearing completion and will provide greater capacity and more reliable operation,’” the city wrote.
Neighbors near Lake Monroe have complained about the sewage smell during the leaks.
