Orlando police arrest man accused in road rage shooting after hit-and-run crash

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man arrested Thursday by Orlando police is accused of following and shooting at a vehicle some weeks ago that had left the scene of a crash he was involved in.

The hit-and-run crash occurred around 9 p.m. Feb. 12 in the area of Balboa Drive and Nowell Street, police said in a statement.

Shemari Sherard McKenzie, 25, was one of two citizens involved in the wreck, described as the victim in the hit-and-run, the statement reads.

As the at-fault vehicle was being driven away prior to police arrival, McKenzie allegedly began to follow it, soon running away after firing one round into the vehicle’s front window, according to investigators. The driver that McKenzie is accused of chasing and shooting at was not struck, the release states.

McKenzie was located and taken into custody on Thursday by the department’s Fugitive Investigative Unit, police said.

He faces charges of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, shooting from a vehicle within 1,000 feet of a person, aggravated assault with a firearm and shooting into an occupied vehicle, the statement reads.

At his first appearance in court Friday, McKenzie was appointed a public defender and was granted no bond pursuant to the attempted second-degree murder charge. A judge ordered that McKenzie have no contact with victims and witnesses, that he cannot return to the scene and cannot possess any weapons and/or firearms.
