“It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve,” the site reads. “However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world.”

Toriyama got his start as an artist in the 1970s, eventually creating the coveted “Dr. Slump” series as his first hit work.

In the 1980s, he created the martial arts manga “Dragon Ball,” which went on to achieve international success, Forbes reports.

Aside from his manga creations, Toriyama also helped on cult classic video game titles like “Chrono Trigger” and the “Dragon Quest” fantasy series.

According to Thursday’s release, a funeral service was held for Toriyama with his family and a few relatives, though due to his “wishes for tranquility,” no flowers, condolence gifts, visits or offerings were accepted.

“Future plans for commemorative gathering is not decided. We will let you know when it’s confirmed. We deeply thank you for your understanding and support as always,” the release says.
