FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Starting this week, transportation crews will begin building a special seawall along State Road A1A in Flagler Beach, and that could lead to lane closures and traffic shifts.
The Florida Department of Transportation is building a buried seawall in Flagler Beach. The seawall will start near South Central Avenue and continue south to just north of High Bridge Road, south of the Volusia County line.
FDOT said crews will shift the travel lanes on A1A a few feet to the west to allow two-way traffic.
While the work continues, there may be times when traffic goes down to a single lane with flagging operations. FDOT said drivers can expect that on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All of this work is expected to happen in the daytime.
The project is part of a plan to repair and strengthen A1A in Flagler and Volusia counties, which has suffered several washouts due to hurricanes and other weather events.
The Volusia County portion of the project is expected to start by the summer, according to the FDOT website. That project will start near Marlin Drive and continue south to near Sunrise Avenue in the Ormond-By-The-Sea area.
