Utility issues in Sanford spark problems for the city

SANFORD, Fla. – A utility issue in the city of Sanford has plagued businesses and homeowners for the past couple of years, causing significant disruptions.

District 4 Commissioner Patty Mahany said sewer and water are “fundamental city services” and emphasized the severity of the situation.

At Hollerbach’s, Tuffy’s, and Sanford Brewing Company, sewage backups have become recurring issues, sometimes forcing early closures, and the owner to send staff home before the end of their shifts.

District 1 Commissioner Sheena Britton expressed frustration with the lack of progress in resolving the issue, particularly in her district, where three businesses are most affected.

“Let’s act like we care about our businesses that bring so much to the city of Sanford,” Britton said.

Sanford Public Works Director Bryant Johnson presented a utility capacity analysis to commissioners Monday, highlighting the need for increased capacity in water and wastewater treatment plants to accommodate Sanford’s growth.

Johnson acknowledged that projects like this take lots of time and planning.

In the meantime, Commissioner Britton suggested immediate measures such as providing luxury bathroom trailers and reimbursement for cleanup to assist affected businesses.

Kristina Haahr’s lives in Sanford she said her friends also experienced sewage problems.

“They had to be careful when they flushed their toilets and when they ran water because the drains would back up into their shower,” she said.

Justin, a resident, said he moved to Sanford for its vibrant community and believes even more people will trickle in.

He thinks the city needs to rise to the occasion.

“If you’re growing, you (have to) be able to keep up with it. If you can’t keep up with it, then you (have to) stop growing, he said.
