Fleeing burglar breaks into Melbourne home, resident hides with gun

Abraham Garcia was running from the sheriff’s office, deputies say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – On Wednesday at 4 in the morning, the Brevard Sheriff’s Office says a vehicle pursuit ended when a burglary suspect ran over stop sticks, and then a foot pursuit began.

The sheriff’s office said Abraham Garcia, 26, ran from the intersection of Babcock Street and US-192 to Elizabeth Street where he broke into a house in an attempt to hide.

An arrest report said when Garcia shattered a window, the man living at the house grabbed his gun and hid in his bedroom.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect was ultimately taken into custody and no one was hurt.

Friday, Luis Cadana, who owns a house next door, told News 6 reporter James Sparvero he found a broken window on his property too.

“I saw glass over here,” he said. “Then, I came outside and the window was completely busted.”

Cadana said his neighbor whose house the suspect broke into lives alone.

“I feel scared sometimes just to come into the house,” Cadana said about the neighborhood.

At his first court appearance Thursday at the Brevard County jail, Judge Kelly Ingram assigned Garcia a bond totaling more than $200,000.

The judge noted Garcia’s criminal history outside of the county including armed robbery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Garcia elected to be represented by the public defender in his case.

He’s still in jail.
