Orlando districts team up for community cleanup ahead of Earth Day

Volunteers picked up trash from Westmoreland Drive down to Magnolia Avenue

ORLANDO, Fla. – To celebrate Earth Day, two Main Street districts came together on Sunday, along with Orlando City Soccer to help the City Beautiful live up to its name.

Dozens of volunteers grabbed their trash bags and gloves to pick up trash from Westmoreland Drive down to Magnolia Avenue in the Parramore and City districts.

Organizers called a double district wide clean up on Sunday.

“I think it’s extremely important,” said Paul Kline with the City District. “This is something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile you know collaborating with the surrounding districts. I feel like rather than working against one another, it’s very helpful for us to work together and I think a community clean up is a great way to start with having that.”

Parramore District Executive Director, Natasha Gaye said she hopes Sunday’s clean up builds connections across the community.

“Sometimes when we’re working in our silo or doing our part, whether it’s our own sustainability practice, we can really see our impact when we come together so just creating that camaraderie in the community.”

Cassandra Lewis was one of the many volunteers hoping to make a difference in her own backyard on Sunday.

“I think it’s super important to just like pay back to your community,” Lewis said. “We’re out here for two, three hours today just cleaning up the area we live in like that we know and love and hang out here every day and just showing the support to the community that we can on Earth Day.”

While she was picking up trash, Lewis also took note of some improvements she might like to see to help keep the city clean.

“You don’t see a lot of recycling bins out here so I think that’s like a huge opportunity for the city just to like get back to the basics when it comes to recycling and educating the community on what we can and can’t recycle,” Lewis said.
