Pilot critical after plane crashes in DeLand

DeLAND, Fla. – A pilot was taken to the hospital after their plane went down in Volusia County Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office said the small plane crashed off of Edison Drive, near the intersection with State Road 11, in DeLand.

Investigators said the pilot, identified as 75-year-old Heinz Gustav Peier, of Ormond Beach, was the only person on the plane.

He remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition.

The sheriff’s office did not provide details on what may have caused the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
