Caleb Houstan went from being a high school champion at Montverde Academy to a playoff contender with the Orlando Magic.
Houstan played on the MVA 2020 Championship Team alongside Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes, and Moses Moody.
He said people may not realize it but, “Everyone is real close, everyone got along, and it was just a really exciting year and I’m just blessed to be a part of it, that’s for sure.”
To join the team, he left everything he knew in Canada to go to the private boarding school at just 15-years-old.
He said, “I remember in the beginning it was hard being away from your parents.”
But Houstan said he found comfort in the staff at the school who went out of their way to make him and other students feel at home.
Now Houstan is taking the lessons he learned at the academy and is using them on the court with the Orlando Magic.
Florida’s Fourth Estate Co-Host Ginger Gadsden caught up with Houstan when he was practicing for the NBA playoffs.
She asked him about his daily routine and how he prepares for such big events.
He said, “I come get a workout in before practice, then eat, eat some food, just chill, video games.” He said he gives his mind a break with Call of Duty and FIFA. Then depending on the day, Houstan said he comes back and gets some shots in at night. If he wants to get in the zone he said he is turning on Drake. “Drake is my favorite artist. He has been my favorite artist since I was a kid,” said the 21-year-old.
And, that makes sense since both Drake and Houstan are natives of Canada.
