Brevard County teacher puts student in arm bar to break up fight

School district and sheriff’s office are investigating teacher’s actions

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A school district and sheriff’s office are investigating how a teacher broke up a fight with a hold common in mixed martial arts.

Another student at Space Coast Junior/Senior High School in Port St. John recorded video showing the teacher using an arm bar Tuesday on an 11th-grade girl.

The 11th-grade girl’s father, Larry Walker, now wants to press charges.

“He ended up putting my daughter’s head between his legs like an arm bar with his legs around her neck,” Walker said. “And when they broke the fight up, the young girl was gone, but he still had my daughter on the ground.”

News 6 blurred the teacher’s face in the video to protect his identity because we don’t yet know whether he will face charges.

Walker said he was furious when he saw the video circulating around the school community.

“She went to try to put her hand to move to try to get his leg off of her,” the father said. “He pulled her arm back and extended more back on her.”

Walker said his daughter was suspended for 10 days for being in the fight.

He also told News 6′s James Sparvero that the teacher hurt her.

“My daughter ended up seeking medical attention, and it’s not pretty,” Walker said.

The father said his family is seeking justice.

“That’s a move you put on a grown man if you’re out on the street fighting or in the ring fighting,” Walker said. “You don’t do that to no kid.”
