Our Roots: Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month

No description found

As May winds down and June starts up, we’re all about celebrating the AANHPI — Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander — community. Let’s take this moment to highlight their stories, contributions and keep pushing for more diversity and inclusion.

AAPI Need for Organ Donation

Trib and Jasmine Persaud first learned about organ donation after the loss of their son, Anand, in a car crash 20 years ago.

The Guyanese couple traveled the world to spread awareness and share support to others. Chronic liver disease affects the AANHPI community more than any other group, and an increase in awareness can change that. Listen to their efforts on this week’s Breakfast with Bridgett, where anchor Bridgett Ellison speaks with the family about the need for organ donation.

Indian American Business Association

This month, News 6 reporter Laverne McGee spoke with the Indian American Business Association (IABA) about their efforts to highlight the achievements of Indian Americans. You can find more about these business success stories here.

Additionally, IABA will host a Women Empowerment Conference this Friday to uplift Indian American women. This will be free admission for IABA members and $30 for nonmembers. You can find more information here.

Disney Springs muralist

“Taking Flight,” a mural honoring AANHPI Heritage Month, is coming to Disney Springs. Houston artist Emily Ding contributed this art piece to represent that anyone can achieve regardless of background. Watch footage of Ding painting “Taking Flight” here.

Stay tuned for our next issue, where we’ll be celebrating Pride Month! As always, send any questions, comments, or story ideas to bellis@wkmg.com! Let’s keep the conversation going!
