PALM BAY, Fla. – Months after police said a 26-year-old man shot five of his family members, killing three of them, the youngest of the survivors is now off life support and recovering at home.
Kamauri Curry’s family invited News 6′s James Sparvero to see the 15-year-old’s remarkable progress just five months after being shot in the head at the Woodlake Village Apartments.
Police said Curry’s uncle, Ta’Shawn Taylor, killed Curry’s grandparents and aunt on Jan. 20.
The family has said Taylor suffered from mental illness, and the state is seeking the death penalty in its prosecution.
Tuesday, Curry said he felt great to be back home with his father, Chari Curry.
“It’s good to be around your family, the people that love you, and it’s just great,” Kamauri Curry said.
Kamauri Curry’s dad said the family right now is focusing on returning the teen to as normal of a life as possible.
Kamauri Curry played basketball at Wade Christian Academy in Melbourne.
“Basically, get right back at it,” Chari Curry said. “Get him right back on the court, him back being to himself, you know, a young 15-year-old. I’m just happy the man’s here.”
Kamauri Curry said surviving taught him to never give up.
“It taught me to keep on going and not stop to be who you are,” the teen said crediting his positivity to his family.
Chari Curry said he learned a lot about being resilient too.
“It very much taught me patience, just to be loving and be there for your child, you know, more than ever,” the father said.
Kamauri Curry and his dad also told me that they’d like to thank everyone who donated to the boy’s recovery.
Right now, that recovery includes weekly physical therapy and later, starting ninth grade.
Kamauri also can’t wait to play basketball again.
