VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Many New Smyrna Beach Utilities customers woke up Friday to a third day without power after an “unusual event” impacted underground electric lines, causing an outage in the beachside area, according to the provider.
By Friday morning, as many as 3,000 customers were still impacted by the outage, highlighted on the provider’s website in clusters stretching from around the southern border of New Smyrna Beach to the northern border of Oak Hill.

Come 10 a.m. Friday, the utility’s website stated only four customers remained impacted as NSBU had already posted again to social media, stating service to all customers had been restored.
The utilities company first acknowledged the situation on Wednesday, posting on social media that an equipment failure had caused a power outage for beachside customers overnight, adding crews had pinpointed the damage and were reportedly working to repair it.
Come Friday morning, the company posted again to say it was able to restore electric service to about half of the customers impacted, allegedly doing so by 8:30 p.m. Thursday. All remaining customers still experiencing the outage were told that NSBU estimated service would be restored by 10 a.m. Friday.
The utility’s penultimate post on the matter otherwise described the outage as the result of an “unusual event impacting our underground electric lines servicing beachside customers.”
