A Florida man is accused of trying to burglarize a closed bank while wearing a mask that he purchased at a nearby gas station, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said that on Saturday, a bank security video monitoring system from the Wells Fargo bank located on U.S 1 in Hobe Sound notified them of a “bank robbery in progress” around 7 p.m.

The bank’s security system team said a masked man was inside of the branch.

“MCSO immediately responded and surrounded the bank. But no one was inside. Not even the suspect,” a news release said in part.

Deputies said that the alarm company later notified them that they waited at least one hour before calling law enforcement but by then the masked man was long gone.

According to the release, a man later identified as 33-year-old Colton Vanhonhenstien of Hobe Sound, was caught on a gas station video purchasing a mask. He then went across the street, where he walked through the bank’s unlocked doors and started opening drawers and cabinets, but they were empty.

Vanhonhenstien then left the bank empty-handed.

“Because security footage clearly captured images of the suspect buying the mask used in this incident, he was located and arrested this afternoon,” the release stated.

Deputies said Vanhonhenstien faces burglary charges as a result.

According to the release, investigators do not know why the doors of the bank were left open or why the security company waited an hour to call deputies.
