Overdose call in Apopka leads to man pulling gun, shooting self, police say

Multiple officers at Oasis at Wekiva apartment complex

Police in Apopka say a man shot himself as they investigated an overdose call at an apartment complex.

The city’s police chief says officers responded to the Oasis at Wekiva apartment complex along Lake Bridge Lane around 4 p.m. regarding the overdose report. Police and Apopke fire crews helped the victim, who was stabilized and taken to an area hospital.

Police say they began to question the only other person in the apartment, a male, when they say he pulled out a firearm. Officers fled the apartment and secured the area when they said they heard a gunshot.

Investigators have not said what brought officers to the complex.

“Officers were around the apartment the entire time and that was the only gunshot that they heard,” said Apopka Police Chief Michael McKinley.

The male was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was in the apartment. The male was not identified.

People were prevented from getting inside the complex as police investigated, but that investigation has now wrapped up.
