Joseph Everett, 27, faces charge of DUI

Joseph Everett, 27 (Polk County Sheriff's Office)

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Polk County deputy was arrested after showing up to work on Saturday morning with “signs of being intoxicated,” according to the sheriff’s office.

In a release, the sheriff’s office announced that the deputy — identified as Joseph Everett, 27 — had the smell of alcohol on his breath, leading his supervisor to believe that Everett was drunk.

Everett admitted to drinking around three “coffee mugs of whiskey” the night prior, and a sobriety test indicated he was impaired, the release shows.

“Anytime someone chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol, it shows a lack of good judgment,” Sheriff Grady Judd said. “If you lack the proper judgment when it comes to drinking and driving, you have no business working in law enforcement. We hold our deputies to a higher standard than the community, and he failed to meet that standard.”

Now, Everett faces a charge of DUI.

While Everett cooperated with the investigation, he ultimately resigned upon his arrest, according the release. He had worked with the sheriff’s office for two years.
