COCOA BEACH, Fla. – An 85-year-old woman sitting with her family on Cocoa Beach was stabbed in the leg by a beach umbrella that flew into her group Saturday afternoon, according to police.
It happened around 3 p.m. near the Hilton Garden Inn, just south of Sidney Fischer Park, police said.
As the woman and her family sat on the sand, a rental umbrella owned by Flohana — a surf and beach store almost 1.5 miles south of the hotel — dislodged from the sand “somewhere south of their location” and flew into the group, impaling the woman’s left leg, according to a report.
First responders used bolt cutters to remove the umbrella’s canopy and later used a saw to shorten the pole for transport, noting the woman lost minimal blood and never lost consciousness as she was hospitalized, the report states.
No other details about the woman’s condition had been shared at the time of this report.
