PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – On Monday, several law enforcement agencies near Tampa launched “Operation Keep Our Streets” to tackle street racing and other traffic issues in the area, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

In a release, state officials said that the operation comes after SB 1764 went into effect on Monday. That law creates harsher penalties for those caught in street races or roadway takeovers.

However, this operation was primarily geared toward the Gandy Bridge and Courtney Campbell Causeway in Pinellas County, and it resulted in 32 arrests, state officials added.

According to the release, those two spots have made headlines due to the number of street-racing arrests over the years — often involving drivers going over 100 mph.

“Due to construction, the Howard Frankland Bridge, another area known for street racing, was not included in yesterday’s operation,” the release reads. “However, an incident of reckless driving and speeding — highlighting why law enforcement is actively working to enforce this illegal activity — resulted in a rollover crash with injuries just last month.”

In all, state officials announced that the operation on Monday yielded the following results:

  • 457 traffic stops
  • 162 traffic citations
  • 295 traffic warnings
  • 5 DUI arrests
  • 18 criminal citations
  • 2 street-racing arrests

Anyone who witnesses an illegal street race or roadway takeover is urged to call the Florida Highway Patrol or dial 911.

“Do not attempt to engage with participants; remain calm and, if possible, pull over to the side of the road,” the release states.
