SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who was arrested at 16 years old in 2022, accused of shooting a fellow student at Seminole High School, was given a 15-year prison sentence on Monday, court records show.
Da’raveius Smith, now 18, pleaded no contest to charges of attempted first-degree murder, discharge of a weapon on school property and shooting into a building or vehicle.
A judge sentenced Smith to 15 years in prison with 895 days of credit for time served, to be followed by five years of probation.
The victim — Jhavon McIntyre, a high school football cornerback who was 18 at the time of the shooting on Jan. 19, 2022 — was hospitalized after Smith shot him three times inside a school building.
The shooting stemmed from a dispute over a dead relative, according to Sanford police. An arrest report states Smith claimed McIntyre confronted him about the relative and would taunt him while changing classes, though officials said in an email to News 6 that “it (did) not appear to be a case of bullying.”

In Smith’s sentencing, the state waived the 25-year minimum mandatory sentence for discharging a firearm and causing great bodily harm.
During Smith’s probation, he will be outfitted with GPS monitoring, he will not be allowed to use or possess firearms or other weapons, he shall have no contact with McIntyre or his family, he won’t be allowed to return to several addresses including that of the school and he will be required to complete several courses related to mental health evaluation, anger management and life skills, according to his plea agreement.
