Investigators said they were conducting surveillance on a house that had multiple gang members inside when they saw Mayberry leave the home with a gun.
Two deputies followed Mayberry to the 7-Eleven and confronted him once he was inside the store, records show.
“Once inside the 7-Eleven, our deputies attempted to make contact with the man. He turned away, then turned back toward the deputy, appeared to reach for a handgun. He was told to stop multiple times. That’s when our deputy shot the man. The man fell to the ground. There was a struggle for the gun and the man was shot again,” Sheriff John Mina said in a news conference after the shooting.
Neither deputy was hurt in the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting and the sheriff’s office said it would conduct its own internal investigation after the state presents its findings.
The sheriff’s office said it would release body-camera video within 30 days after the shooting.
