The proposal would mirror a similar ordinance change in Eustis, which was the first city in Florida to install speed cameras in school zones.

According to Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri, the city’s speed camera in front of Eustis Elementary School captured 1,300 drivers speeding at least 10 mph over the speed limit and issued $100 tickets for each violation in just the first five weeks after it was activated on April 3.

Winter Garden is using photo radar in school zones, while the city of Orlando is also considering cameras. Palm Bay is scheduled to have a school zone system in place and running by the start of the school year in August.
