Florida wildlife officials investigate death on Ocklawaha River

OCKLAWAHA, Fla. – A woman was struck and killed by a pontoon boat propeller Sunday in Marion County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The boating accident happened around 1:30 p.m. on the Ocklawaha River near Nelson’s Fish Camp.

The FWC said eight people were aboard the pontoon boat when Wendy Mooney, 50, went overboard.

The captain of the boat and another passenger jumped in the water to assist Mooney, who was injured by the boat’s propeller, officials said.

Mooney was pronounced dead as she was being taken to a hospital, according to Florida wildlife officials.

“The FWC expresses their deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones,” officials said in a statement.

No other details have been released, and an investigation is ongoing.

The FWC initially said the incident happened in Lake County before clarifying that it happened in Marion County. According to the FWC, the nearest town was Umatilla, which is in Lake County.
