Seminole County approves $350K to Second Harvest Food Bank to help residents

Money will go toward food distribution, delivery, items and refrigeration

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – The Board of County Commissioners in Seminole County signed off thousands of dollars in additional funding to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Tuesday.

There will be $350,000 going to the nonprofit to help with food distribution, food delivery, perishable food items, and refrigeration.

News 6 spoke to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Chief Development Officer Greg Higgerson said the goal is to get results for income-restricted people living in Seminole County.

“$350,000 for a specific county will provide more than 1.2 million meals. It will help with our home deliveries up there for people that can’t get out to pantries, and they’ll supply just lots more food for the emergency food pantry network throughout Seminole County,” Higgerson said.

Higgerson said the most areas in need are in Sanford and the county line between Orange and Seminole County.

“You know, our partner feeding programs we put food into from Second Harvest continue to tell us that if they had more food resources available, they can help more people because they are seeing the demand firsthand that’s where really the rubber meets the road and the more food that we are able to distribute to them the more people they are going to be able to help,” Higgerson said.
