Indian River County deputy shoots, kills Palm Bay man with knife, officials say

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. – A Palm Bay man was shot and killed by an Indian River County deputy after officials said the man swung a knife at him at a gas station.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a disturbance call around 10 p.m. Sunday concerning an intoxicated individual at the RaceTrac just off County Road 512 and Interstate 95 in Vero Beach.

Sheriff Eric Flowers said when the deputy arrived, 42-year-old Jeffrey Lee Miller was harassing customers and then began approaching the deputy with a knife. The deputy then fired several shots striking Miller, who then died at the scene.

The sheriff also said that Miller had an extensive criminal history, including multiple felony charges, and an active warrant out of Pennsylvania for a parole violation.

No other injuries were reported. The shooting is under investigation.
