‘Confused’ sea turtles found climbing Flagler County’s new dunes

County is trying to quickly install sand fencing to stop the sea turtles and gopher tortoises

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – With major beach renourishment projects going on to restore its dunes, Flagler County said it is causing some confusion for sea turtles. The county said wayward turtles have been crawling up the new dunes and it’s trying to find solutions to stop them.

The county put the alert out that people have found them crawling up the new dunes and the biggest fear is that the turtles will wander into A1A traffic. That hasn’t happened yet but that’s what they want to try and prevent.

Officials said the FWC approved the design of the dune’s slope and said it should be too steep for the turtles, but the sea creatures proved otherwise.

Now, the county is trying to quickly install sand fencing to stop the sea turtles and gopher tortoises.

In the meantime, if you see a sea turtle that doesn’t seem like it’s where it is supposed to be, like inching towards A1A, Flagler County wants you to give FWC’s hotline a call at 888-404-FWCC.
