Longwood, DeLand invest in SunRail development

SunRail service begins Aug. 12 in DeLand

LONGWOOD, Fla. – The city of Longwood is investing in its downtown near the SunRail station on a transformative project, starting with the removal of an outdated water tower.

Once completed, the area will boast new bike lanes, pedestrian sitting areas, and parks.

Longwood Deputy Mayor Matt Morgan said on Monday that the project will help invest in the future of Longwood’s growth.

Morgan highlighted that the city’s “Sun Hub” project will rejuvenate the area surrounding the city’s SunRail station.

“Accessibility for all our folks who are dying to ride their bikes through our entire city — or portions of it — scooting through our city, walking through our city,” Morgan said.

Longwood Public Works Director Shad Smith said “Sun Hub” will take about 10 years to complete and cost about $10 million.

“Long-term planning, I think, is crucial because you have to save up the money. We are a small city, so we have to save up the money,” Smith said.

The city of DeLand is preparing to open its new SunRail station, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday. DeLand is considering options for a shuttle service or trolley to transport people to and from the station.

SunRail service begins on Aug. 12 in DeLand.
