OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Students at Osceola public schools in grades 6-12 will have their belongings subject to routine random searches starting this school year, Osceola School District said in a statement Wednesday.
Students will be selected using an electronic randomization tool located and managed at the district level, according to officials. These searches will be conducted on a regular basis by school administration and principal designees utilizing handheld metal detection devices.
“By conducting these searches, we aim to create a safer environment where students can clearly focus on academics without concerns for their well-being,” district officials said. “Pursuant to School Board Policy 5.31 and Florida Statute 1003.31(1), searches will be conducted with the utmost respect for students’ privacy and dignity.”
This proactive measure aims to deter the possession of prohibited items, including weapons, drugs and other dangerous items. Officials said any prohibited items found will be handled according to the district’s Code of Student Conduct and with law enforcement as necessary.
“We appreciate the ongoing support of students and parents as we all continue to work together to encourage our students to make choices that reflect the best version of themselves,” a spokesperson for the district said. “Safe and secure learning environments will always remain the top priority.”
