SANFORD, Fla. – Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is celebrating the addition of a slippery new furry friend.

The Sanford-area zoo welcomed Fern the otter, who quickly adapted to her new home in the zoo’s North American river otter habitat with another otter named Molly, according to a news release.

“Fern’s arrival at the Central Florida Zoo not only provides an opportunity for fun, but also raises awareness about an important native species,” zoo CEO Richard E. Glover, Jr. said in a statement.

The zoo’s river otter habitat is sponsored by Wekiva Island and was built with funding donated by Sean and Nina Barth.

“Fern is a great example of the special wildlife found right here in Central Florida — that both the Zoo and Wekiva Island are dedicated to protecting,” Bill Weinaug, owner of Wekiva Island, said in a statement. “We are thrilled that Molly now has a friend joining her.”
