‘Volunteers needed:’ Light Orlando needs 2,000 volunteers to help assemble 1 million meals

Food to be donated to 75 local organizations

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nonprofit Light Orlando is in need of volunteers this weekend for it’s annual fight against hunger project.

The event is taking place at the Central Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center Saturday, Aug. 24.

The goal is to pack 1 million meals that will be donated to at least 75 local organizations set to help people in need.

“Everyone is suffering from the inflation rate and food is getting more and more difficult to put on the table,” Troy Wright with Light Orlando said.

Last year, News 6 was at the event where volunteers got results and packed 500,000 meals. So this year, Light Orlando decided to do 1 million meals.

“We are confident that the community is going to come out because again Orlando always (rises) to the occasion,” Wright said.

Saturday’s event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. There are two shifts available for meal packing: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
