‘Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do:’ Kappy’s Subs in Maitland closing after 57 years

Restaurant’s last day will be Sept. 14

MAITLAND, Fla. – Kappy’s Subs, an iconic Central Florida eatery that has been open for 57 years, announced Monday on social media that it is closing for good this weekend.

“The people who bought the Kappy’s property did not negotiate in good faith with us to extend our lease and as such we do not have a restaurant to operate out of and will be forced to close,” read the post by Executive Chef Adam Milsom.

The restaurant’s last day of business will be Saturday, Sept. 14, and the doors are scheduled to close for good at 4 p.m. or until they run out of food.

The restaurant, which features cheesesteaks, hotdogs, milkshakes and other popular diner food, opened in Maitland in 1967 and has been run by the same family since 1972.

“It has been an absolute honor for me and my family to serve this community for the past 52 years. We deeply appreciate everyone who has walked through our doors throughout our time in service and will miss being able to feed y’all every day. Closing Kappy’s is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life and I have been brought to tears on several occasions in the past few days. Believe me, this is not how we want to go out and is as sudden a surprise to us as it is to everyone else.”

The historical walk-up building offering window service and a covered eating area stands out among the rapid growth of new construction along busy North Orlando Avenue.

The owners did not say what will happen to the building once it closes.
