ORLANDO, Fla. – You may notice more people wearing orange on Tuesday and it’s for a great cause. It’s Hunger Action Day, part of Hunger Action Month.
Maureen Mikel from Second Harvest Food Bank shared details about their 30 Ways In 30 Days Calendar to get results.
“There is not a face to hunger. We’re often asked who comes to our feeding partners. These are children, families, and parents working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet,” said Mikel. “At the end of the day, it could be the person who sits next to you at work. A lot of people are one paycheck or disaster away from needing food assistance. That’s where Second Harvest and the community step in to help folks out.”
One in six children and one in eight adults in Central Florida don’t know where their next meal will come from.
“We really heavily rely on our volunteers. For every dollar donated, we are able to provide 4 meals to the community, but in 30 Ways In 30 Days, it could be as small an action as liking Second Harvest on social media or sharing a post so we can make more people aware that hunger is actually an issue in Central Florida,” Mikel said.
