Who has the right of way following a U-turn?

News 6 viewers ask traffic questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A viewer asked: If someone is making a U-turn on southbound State Road 436 at University Boulevard to get to that Mobile gas station, who has to yield to who?

When drivers are traveling southbound on State Road 436 they are permitted to conduct a U-turn at the intersection of University Boulevard when the traffic control device allows it.

Westbound University Boulevard at that intersection has a dedicated right-turn lane. Depending on the signals from the traffic light, the right turn would have to practice extreme caution when making that right if a driver was conducting a legal U-turn.

This would be an intersection where both drivers would need to be extremely observant.
