Apopka High School cleared after odor in gym prompted a hold

No one allowed on, off campus while fire department investigated

APOPKA, Fla. – Apopka High School was placed on a hold Thursday afternoon as firefighters investigated an odor in the gym, according to Principal Lyle Heinz.

In messaging to student families around 1:30 p.m., Heinz said that all students and staff are safe, yet he added that during a hold, no one would be allowed onto or off of the school’s campus.

Apopka High School families, this is Principal Heinz, calling to inform you that our school has been placed on a HOLD due to an odor in the gym that is being investigated by the Apopka Fire Department. All students and staff are safe. Parents, please remember that during a HOLD no one will be allowed on or off campus. I will be sure to update you once the HOLD is lifted. Thank you for listening.

In an update around 3 p.m., a school district spokesperson said the school had been cleared and students were dismissed for the day. No other areas of the campus were impacted.
